5-asa Is No Use for Prevention of Diarrhea Due to Acute Radiation Enteritis

چکیده
Acute radiation enteritis is a common side effect of radiation of abdominal or pelvic malignancies, which often occurs during or shortly after radiation therapy. Though the mechanisms of diarrhea after pelvic radiotherapy are incompletely understood, it was suggested that inflammation of the intestinal mucosa was an important pathophysiological factor. 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) as an antiinflammatory drug has been tried for prevention of acute radiation enteritis in several studies. However, it was controversial that whether the use of 5-ASA was associated with a decrease in the incidence of diarrhea due to radiation therapy. To our best knowledge, this is the first quantitative review of the published data regarding clinical efficacy of 5-ASA for prevention of diarrhea due to radiation therapy in the literature. Nutritional Supplement Based on Zinc, Prebiotics, Probiotics and Vitamins to Prevent Radiation-related Gastrointestinal Disorders.
AIM The present phase II study aimed to evaluate the tolerance and safety of Dixentil, a nutritional supplement based on zinc with the addition of prebiotics (galacto-oligosaccharides), tyndalized probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. casei) and vitamins B1, B2 and B6, and nicotinamide), given as prophylaxis to patients undergoing pelvic radiotherapy and its efficacy in the prevention an...

متن کاملEfficacy of Sucralfate Ointment in Prevention of Acute Proctitis in Cancer Patients: a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
Background: Acute radiation proctitis (ARP) is a usual adverse effect in patients undergoing pelvic radiotherapy. The symptoms include diarrhea, rectal blood or mucus discharge, fecal urgency and tenesmus with pain. Sucralfate, an aluminum-based salt of sucrose octasulfate, is a cytoprotective agent that forms a coating barrier at injured sites by adhering to mucoproteins. It has been used in t...

Cancer treatment regimens that include radiation therapy (RT) to the abdominal region for cervical, ovarian, prostate, sigmoid, or colorectal cancer potentially disturb the colonization resistance of the indigenous gut flora, causing RT-induced diarrhea, enteritis, and colitis in more than 80% of patients with cancer. One approach for the prevention of RT-induced diarrhea is the use of probioti...
متن کاملProphylactic and therapeutic effects of oral budesonide for acute radiation-induced enteritis and colitis in rats.
No satisfactory means has been found to control the symptoms of diarrhea and weight loss caused by radiation-induced enteritis and colitis. As a glucocorticoid, budesonide has multiple effects, and this study aimed to test whether it could be effective in treating these symptoms. Twenty-eight male Wistar albino rats were randomly allocated into 4 groups. Group I received 0.1 mg/kg/day budesonid...
